These prints were created by the Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861), considered alongside Hokusai and Hiroshige as one of the greatest of the Japanese printers.

His work primarily uses a woodblock printing technique, the prints really are quite sublime and you can clearly see how this work has been visually influential in the work of other artists, Kiki Smith and Klimt come to mind immediatly.
