Persian Influences

Sheki Foundation. Persian influences, built in 1762.
Detail from Dream House by Ghost of a Dream, 2009. Mirror reflection shows a reproduction of a church fresco which was actually restored using lottery funds.
These two images come from different articles in the same edition of World of Interiors, completely different times but clearly referencing of history by Brooklyn based duo: Ghost of a Dream who create these interior installations from discarded scratchcards. The more original image comes from the Sheki Foundation in present day Azerbaijan. Source: 24

I am also reminded of a visit to the Alcazar in Seville, Spain. Have some drawings from the visit that I will endeavor to upload.

This book is so beautiful, full of stunning illustration of the royal paintings of Jodhpur. The paintings use of colour, composition and scale all work to tell the tales of society.

These prints were created by the Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861), considered alongside Hokusai and Hiroshige as one of the greatest of the Japanese printers.

His work primarily uses a woodblock printing technique, the prints really are quite sublime and you can clearly see how this work has been visually influential in the work of other artists, Kiki Smith and Klimt come to mind immediatly.

Early Aboriginal Paintings from Papunya

Tip and Dot painting

Chris Offili, Mono Negro, 1999 - 2002. Source: 21

Chris Ofili, She, 1997. Source: 21

Artist Chris Ofili spent a long time developing paintings around a number of visual motifs used repetatively in order to build up a drawing. In this case he is using painted dots but he succesfully utilizes small repeats of a head/portrait.

The work seems to be to be heavily influenced by aboriginal art, the work here is by Ginger Riley and although not utilising the dot as heavily it is clear to see the references.

CJ Lim

Heath Robinson illustration
CJ Lim

CJ Lim ; A cake building

The work of CJ Lim is often comical in it's approach, not serious in it's vision and provides some inspiring idea's and approaches to what design is and can be. A great inspiration of his are the illustrations of Heath Robinson.

Harvesting Homes

This article in Bloom highlights the way in which design is changing / adapting and considering what it's position is within global ethics & sustainability. Reminds me of some of the work by CJ Lim.

origins of grown jacket?

I have just come across this piece in the excellent book: Fashioning the Future. This jacket miniarture has been grown in a lab like the work of Suzanne Lee. This work however was done for those veggie's with a conscience who do not feel happy wearing leather. This piece (an intended art piece) called Victimless Leather, 2004 was developed by bio artists Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr - based at SymbioticA. The project was established in Australia as Tissue Culture & Art Project.
